A manor house in the style of a northern Italian villa, set in a landscape park designed by Peter Joseph Lenné – 45 minutes from the Baltic Sea.
Everything in motion – not yet finished. Since 2019 we have been bringing Schloss Gültz back to life step by step. Guests are welcome to watch – and to stay.
Northern Italian villa in Pomerania
Built between 1868 and 1872 to plans by Schwerin court architect Georg Daniel for Helmuth Freiherr von Maltzahn, the manor house combines northern Italian villa architecture with Prussian historicism: a campanile-like tower, a coffered entrance hall on two columns and, above all, the Mirror Hall.
The von Maltzahn family owned the Gültz estate from 1496 until the expropriation of 1945. After decades as a vocational school, hotel and vacant building, the house was bought at a foreclosure auction in 2019 and has been under restoration ever since.

When Helmuth Freiherr von Maltzahn had his new manor house built between 1868 and 1872, he planned the Mirror Hall as the representative centre of social life. Schwerin architect Georg Daniel created a ballroom of majestic proportion: 156 square metres beneath a 6.80-metre stucco ceiling in a characteristic sky blue, which – together with the large mirrored walls – gave the hall its name.
Large gilded wall mirrors multiply the light of the chandeliers. Between them, delicate stucco frames the tall arched windows that open onto the Lenné park – a composition of architecture and nature that has survived intact to this day.

Balls & tango evenings
A ballroom wants to dance: 156 m² of historic oak parquet, mirrors that double every turn. Summer balls, New Year´s Eve under the chandeliers, milongas by candlelight – this room was built for dancing in 1872 and never unlearned it.
Weddings
Civil and humanist ceremonies, reception on the terrace, dinner by candlelight, the first dance on historic parquet. You choose catering, music and programme – we provide the setting and personal support.
Concerts & culture
Chamber music, solo recitals and readings in an acoustically remarkable room with up to 150 seats.
Corporate events
Receptions, off-sites and celebrations in a setting no hotel can offer – with the park at the door.

Series W107 · classic car hire at Schloss Gültz. Cruise through the Mecklenburg Lake District, over Rügen and Usedom to the Baltic coast – in a legendary roadster.
The Mercedes-Benz 380 SL (W107) is one of the most elegant roadsters ever to leave Stuttgart. Ours is a US model that spent its first decades under the American sun before returning to Germany. The body is completely unwelded – a rare condition for a car of this age. It was restored carefully, keeping the original patina.

The Gültz Castle Rally – Usedom & Rügen
Chrome in the morning light, tree-lined avenues to the horizon, a glass of wine behind castle walls at night: we are preparing multi-day classic car rallies starting at Gültz Castle – curated pleasure drives from manor to manor, through Lenné parks and along Western Pomerania's finest avenues to the Baltic Sea. Not a race, but a journey from another era.

Klempenow Castle (1231), Broock Palace with its Lenné park, the fairy-tale palace of Neetzow, the Renaissance fortress of Spantekow, the moated castle of Mellenthin (1575) with its own brewery, and the imperial seaside resorts of Usedom.

The Swedish baroque palace of Griebenow, Caspar David Friedrich's Eldena abbey ruins in a Lenné park, UNESCO-listed Stralsund, the classicist residence town of Putbus, Granitz hunting lodge with Schinkel's cast-iron staircase, the chalk cliffs of Jasmund, Cape Arkona and the German Avenue Road.
The rallies are in preparation and not yet bookable. Planned: small convoys of classic cars, a roadbook with the story of every stop, reserved breaks at castle hotels and manor kitchens, start and finish in the Lenné park of Gültz Castle. Join the waiting list – you will be the first to know.

Mercedes Sprinter camper

History
Almost 450 years of the von Maltzahn family, a manor house of 1872, a Lenné park of 1840 – and a rescue that began in 2019.
First record of the von Maltzahn family
One of the oldest noble families of Pomerania.
Gültz becomes a Maltzahn estate
Apart from the years 1569–1646 (von Preen family), Gültz remained in the family until 1945.
Prussian
The area south of the Peene passes from Sweden to Prussia; from 1815 it belongs to the Prussian province of Pomerania, district of Demmin.
Lenné park
Peter Joseph Lenné draws up the beautification plan for the estate – 15 hectares of English-style landscape park with ponds, avenues and lines of sight.
The manor house
Helmuth Freiherr von Maltzahn has the present house built to plans by Schwerin architect Georg Daniel: 99 rooms, a campanile-like tower, the Mirror Hall.
Quiet resistance
Helmuth von Maltzahn the younger refuses to fly the swastika flag on the estate and to buy fuel from the party – the farm switches to 32 draught oxen.
Expropriation
Land reform, looting; the house becomes the “Georg Ewald” vocational school with boarding house.
GDR restoration
Renovation under the Neubrandenburg planning office and the district conservation authority. The original files – photos, colour schemes, minutes – are kept at Schloss Gültz.
Hotel and vacancy
A further renovation and a short-lived hotel; afterwards the house stands largely empty.
A new beginning
Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft Schloss Gültz UG buys the house at a foreclosure auction. Since then: restoration step by step, with craftsmen, journeymen and many helping hands.
Three generations
Helmuth Freiherr von Maltzahn-Gültz (1840–1923)
Builder of the house, member of the Reichstag, from 1888 State Secretary of the Imperial Treasury and a close confidant of Otto von Bismarck – after Bismarck's fall in 1890 he was one of the few who kept up the friendship, documented in Bismarck's letters and in Maltzahn's own memoir (Cotta, 1915). Later Oberpräsident of the province of Pomerania.
Axel von Maltzahn (1868–1931)
District administrator in Grimmen, later ministerial official; passionate Wagnerian and mathematician.
Helmuth von Maltzahn (1900–1945)
Witnessed the 1923 Munich putsch as a young man; on Gültz he quietly defied the Nazi regime. His mother declined the “Mother’s Cross”: “I will not be awarded like a breeding sow.”
